Gion Matsuri fills the whole of July in Kyoto, with the lantern-lit Yoiyama nights of 14 to 16 July and the grand float procession on the 17th. Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri answers on 24 and 25 July with a hundred lantern-lit boats and fireworks on the Okawa. Nachi’s fire rite burns on 14 July, Gujo Odori’s dance nights begin mid-month, and the Sumida River Fireworks close the month in Tokyo.
It is the start of the fireworks season rather than its height. The Sumida River Fireworks on the last Saturday of July are Tokyo’s oldest and most famous, drawing around a million people to the riverbanks, and Tenjin Matsuri’s dedication fireworks light the Okawa on the 25th. The great competitions at Nagaoka and Omagari, and Yokohama’s Minato Mirai show, follow in August.
July is hot and humid, so take the daytime rites early and keep to shaded streets, then give the evenings to the Yoiyama nights and the fireworks. Fireworks displays have rain dates: Sumida River moves to the following day and is cancelled if both are wet. Gion Matsuri’s processions go ahead regardless. Carry water, and expect slow trains after every finale. Hokkaido’s Furano lavender is the cool alternative.
