Farm Tomita is the farm that saved Furano's lavender. When synthetic fragrances made the crop uneconomic, the Tomita family kept their fields going, and a railway poster of them in the 1970s turned the farm into the symbol of a Hokkaido summer. Today its fields step up the hillside above Nakafurano in stripes of lavender and other flowers, with the Tokachi range behind, and the farm is free to enter, with lavender ice cream and a distillery on site.
The lavender peaks in the first half of July, though the exact timing moves with the season. The main farm is open all year; Lavender East, the farm's largest single field a short distance away, opens only from around 20 June to 20 July, so a visit that wants both should fall before that closes. The second week of July is the best compromise between full colour and manageable crowds, and arriving before 9:00, before the coaches from Sapporo, makes an enormous difference to how the fields feel.
The farm is a walk from the seasonal Lavender Farm Station on the JR Furano Line, which opens only in summer, or a short taxi from Nakafurano. Furano's high season coincides with the rest of Hokkaido's, so lodging in Furano and Biei fills fast. Expect a very popular farm rather than a wild landscape, and a season that has not been formally announced for 2026 beyond the usual window.
