Frequently Asked Questions
Two good ones open the month. The Atsuta Festival at Nagoya’s Atsuta Shrine on 5 June lights its towering makiwara lanterns at dusk and closes with fireworks from about 19:40, the city’s unofficial first day of summer. The same weekend, Kanazawa’s Hyakumangoku Festival stages a four-hour costumed procession from the station’s Tsuzumi Gate to the castle, with the grand procession on the Saturday.
Tsuyu sets in across most of Honshu in early June, bringing humid days and frequent showers, which is one reason so few outdoor festivals are scheduled. The two big June events both fall in the first week, before the rains settle in. Hokkaido escapes the rainy season, and Farm Tomita’s Lavender East field opens around 20 June, ahead of the July peak in Furano.
This is the month to secure July and August rooms if you have not already. Kyoto for Gion Matsuri’s mid-July Yoiyama nights, Aomori for Nebuta and Tokushima for Awa Odori all sell out months ahead, and Nagaoka’s paid fireworks seats are gone by spring. Nagasaki Kunchi’s October shrine stands also go on sale in June and sell out almost at once.
