Japan's first micro pig café is still the loveliest of them: a house in Meguro whose top floor is a sunlit attic under bare beams, with sofas, low tables and a balcony the pigs treat as their own sun deck. Settle in with a drink and mipig's own donut and the herd comes to you — one will clamber up, tuck itself against you and fall fast asleep, which is rather the whole point. It is a short bus ride out from Meguro Station, and a genuinely peaceful hour by Tokyo standards.

You get an hour upstairs in the pigs' attic with a drink, mipig's own donut and a postcard to take away at the end. The micro pigs have the run of the room and the balcony beyond it, and when one takes to you — they usually do — it climbs up, curls into a ball on your lap and dozes off.
It is the original, and the most house-like of the lot: a fourth-floor attic under exposed beams with sofas rather than cushions, and a small balcony the pigs wander out onto to sit in the sun. It is also the quietest of the Tokyo branches, being off in a residential pocket rather than on a shopping street.
The café is at 4-11-3 Meguro in Meguro-ku, out past the site of the old Meguro racecourse. From JR Meguro Station take a Tokyu bus to the Moto-keibajo-mae stop, which leaves about three minutes on foot. It is open from 10am to 6pm.
A few, all for the pigs' sake: guests can visit from their third day in Japan onwards, and not within two days of leaving a country where African swine fever is present or of handling pigs anywhere else. Anyone feeling unwell is asked to come another day, since pigs can catch our bugs too.
