mipig cafe Asakusa dresses its pig room up as a little summer festival: red lacquer walls, paper lanterns, cherry-blossom screens and wagasa parasols open across the ceiling, with the micro pigs trotting about underneath. Settle onto one of the red cushions with a drink and give it a minute — one of them will decide your lap is the best spot in the room and curl up there for a nap. It is a soft, happy hour a couple of streets from Sensō-ji, and about as photogenic as Asakusa gets.

You get an hour on the cushions with free-flow drinks and a postcard to take away at the end, while the micro pigs have the run of the room. When one takes to you — they usually do — it climbs up, curls into a ball on your lap and dozes off, which is when the best photos happen.
Yes, and they are well used to it. Sit low with a blanket over your lap and most of them will clamber up by themselves; staff stay with you throughout so the pigs keep their calm.
On the second floor of the Chateau Amour building at 1-36-11 Asakusa in Taito-ku, on Kannon-dori just west of the Nakamise arcade — a few minutes on foot from Asakusa Station and from Sensō-ji itself. It is open from 9am to 7pm.
A few, all for the pigs' sake: guests can visit from their third day in Japan onwards, and not within two days of leaving a country where African swine fever is present or of handling pigs anywhere else. Anyone feeling unwell is asked to come another day, since pigs can catch our bugs too.
