Photo:Kitty Castle at Harmonyland in Oita. It is the open-air Sanrio park, an easy add-on to Beppu's hot springs, and much quieter than Puroland.

Sanrio Harmonyland is the open-air sister to Tokyo's Puroland — one of only two Sanrio theme parks in Japan — set on a green hilltop in Hiji, Oita, an easy hop from Beppu's hot springs. Hello Kitty, My Melody and Cinnamoroll headline a full day of musicals, parades and character greetings, threaded between gentle rides, themed restaurants and gift shops stacked with Kyushu-exclusive goods. Its outdoor setting gives it a breezier, garden-party feel than its indoor Tokyo sibling, and the young-family pace makes it a natural stop on a Kyushu itinerary.
