Uminonakamichi Marine World in Fukuoka

Marine World Uminonakamichi is Kyushu's largest aquarium, set on the pine-covered sandbar that separates Hakata Bay from the open sea. Its subject is Kyushu's own waters: a seven-metre-deep main tank patrolled by over 150 sharks, coastal tanks tracing the island shore by shore, and sea otters so rare that only eight remain in all of Japan. Outside, dolphins and sea lions perform in a pool that opens straight onto Hakata Bay — the city skyline floats behind every leap.

The JR Kashii Line runs from Hakata to Uminonakamichi Station, a few minutes' walk from the gates — or make the trip part of the fun and cross Hakata Bay by ferry from the city's piers to the Uminonakamichi landing. Either way you arrive on the sandbar beside Uminonakamichi Seaside Park.
It's devoted to the seas of Kyushu — the tanks recreate the island's own waters rather than a world tour. The headline acts are the shark-filled main tank, seven metres deep with over 150 of them, the sea otters — just eight left in all of Japan, and the outdoor dolphin pool with the bay for a backdrop.
