Huis Ten Bosch rebuilds 17th-century Holland on the shore of Omura Bay in Sasebo, Nagasaki — brick townhouses, working windmills and canals you can cruise by boat, spread across one of the largest theme-park sites in Japan. More than forty attractions divide into nine themed kingdoms: thrill rides in the Adventure Park, world-spanning glass art in the Art Garden's Glass Museum, a whole kingdom of teddy bears, and the Sky Carousel turning slowly above the rooftops. Spring's tulip fields are the park's signature, and after dark it becomes the Kingdom of Light, one of Japan's most celebrated illuminations.

JR Huis Ten Bosch Station sits directly across a footbridge from the park gates. The Huis Ten Bosch limited express runs from Hakata Station in Fukuoka in about an hour and 45 minutes, and the Seaside Liner rapid train connects Nagasaki Station in around an hour and a half.
Spring is the park at its most Dutch, when the tulip festival carpets the gardens in bloom; summer brings water play, fireworks and night shows. The Kingdom of Light illuminations run through the colder months — worth planning any visit to stretch past sunset, whatever the season.
A full day covers the highlights, though the site is vast enough that hotels stand inside the park for those who want the illuminations without the late train back. Families do especially well here: the forty-odd attractions lean toward all-ages fun, canals and open squares included.
