mipig cafe Kyoto keeps its herd in a little tatami room off Shinkyogoku: low dark-wood tables, indigo floor cushions, a painted bamboo pillar, and micro pigs pottering about between them. Settle onto a cushion with a drink and it usually takes a minute or two before one climbs into your lap, flops over and falls fast asleep. Holding them, photographing them and quietly losing an hour to them is the whole idea — a few steps off one of the busiest shopping streets in the city.

You get an hour on the cushions with free-flow drinks and a postcard to take away at the end, while the micro pigs have the run of the room. When one takes to you — they usually do — it climbs up, curls into a ball on your lap and dozes off, which is when the best photos happen.
Yes, and they are well used to it. Sit low with a blanket over your lap and most of them will clamber up by themselves; staff stay with you throughout so the pigs keep their calm.
In the Sichiho Shinkyogoku building on Shinkyogoku-dori, just north of Shijo — a couple of minutes from Exit 9 of Kyoto-kawaramachi Station, in the middle of the covered shopping arcades. It is open from 10am to 8pm.
A few, all for the pigs' sake: guests can visit from their third day in Japan onwards, and not within two days of leaving a country where African swine fever is present or of handling pigs anywhere else. Anyone feeling unwell is asked to come another day, since pigs can catch our bugs too.
