Where the Pacific crashes against Oarai's coast, one of Japan's biggest aquariums answers it in kind: 20,000 square metres holding some 70,000 creatures of 580 species across nine zones. Aqua World's calling card is sharks — the largest collection in Japan, dozens of species prowling its tanks — alongside a nation-leading sunfish exhibit whose slow-motion giants hang like moons in the water. Sea otters, spotted seals, sea lions and sea birds round out the cast, and the dolphin shows play to an ocean literally visible beyond the pool.

The aquarium stands on the Oarai coast about two hours from Tokyo: take the JR Joban Line or a highway bus to Mito, transfer to the Oarai Kashima Line for Oarai Station, then a short bus or taxi ride to the seafront. Drivers use the large lot beside the entrance.
Half a day fills naturally: the nine zones, the dolphin and sea lion show — worth planning around, with the real ocean as its backdrop — and the shark and sunfish tanks that reward slow second passes. Families with young children often stretch it further with the touch pools and kids' play zone.
