Photo:A tank at NIFREL in EXPOCITY. It deliberately blurs aquarium, zoo and gallery — the lighting is designed as much for the visitor as the animals.

NIFREL folds an aquarium, a zoo and an art gallery into one luminous space at EXPOCITY in northern Osaka, created by the team behind Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan around the idea of touching the world with your senses. Around 150 species live behind the barest of barriers — capybaras lounge and African penguins wander zones you walk straight through — in rooms staged like installations around colour, shape and behaviour. It sits right beside Expo '70 Commemorative Park, an easy monorail ride from the city.
