Osaka's helping of Akihabara fantasy: at Maidreamin, Japan's best-known maid café chain, waitresses in frilled uniforms welcome you to a candy-coloured dreamworld where every dish arrives with a ritual — a chant performed together before you eat, ketchup art drawn onto your omurice at the table, and a live song-and-dance stage with a commemorative photo to carry out. Menus run past fifty drinks and display in English, Chinese and Korean, so the culture gap is the entertainment rather than a barrier. Two Osaka stores serve the dream: one a minute from Nankai Namba Station, the other on Nipponbashi's Ota Road, the city's otaku main street.
