Three of Kansai's finest in one arc from Osaka: the morning belongs to Himeji Castle, the White Heron — Japan's most celebrated original castle, national treasure and World Heritage Site — with the landscaped ponds and bridges of Koko-en Garden and the chief retainers' quarter at the Karo Oyashiki park beside it. The afternoon crosses to Arima Onsen, oldest of Japan's famous hot-spring towns, for a soak or a wander through its lantern-lit lanes, before the coach climbs Mount Rokko for a 931-metre panorama over Kobe, Osaka Bay and the Seto Inland Sea. It is Japan's castle: the largest and best-preserved original fortress in the country, never destroyed by war, fire or earthquake, and among the first Japanese sites inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage. The name White Heron comes from its brilliant plastered walls, which look ready to take flight above the town.
Nine walled gardens laid out on the site of the lords' west residence at the castle's foot — ponds crossed by low bridges, a tea garden, pine and bamboo courts — designated a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty and recostumed completely by each season.
