Ashikaga Flower Park Flower Fantasy

When the wisteria are bare, Ashikaga Flower Park rebuilds itself in light. Flower Fantasy dresses the whole park, its trellises, ponds and lawns, in more than five million bulbs arranged as the flowers that grow there in spring: the Great Wisteria recreated in hanging strands of purple light, the wisteria tunnel in white, and fields of lit tulips and roses. It runs from a Saturday in mid-October to a Sunday in mid-February, through three themed phases, an autumn programme, a Christmas one from late November through late December and a New Year one from New Year’s Day, and it is regularly ranked among the three great illuminations of Japan.

The evening session opens at 15:30 and the lights come up between 16:30 and 17:00, so arriving on a weekday before sunset lets you see the park in daylight, with its autumn colour or winter roses, and then watch the switch-on as the sky darkens, which is the best moment of the evening. Gates close at 20:30 on weekdays and 21:00 at weekends and on holidays, half an hour later from mid-November to early January. The Christmas phase has the fullest display and the biggest crowds, particularly on weekends, when the queue at the gate and the traffic on the surrounding roads can be long.

The park's own station on the JR Ryomo Line is a few minutes' walk from the entrance, reached from Tokyo via Oyama or Takasaki. Evening admission is ¥1,500 for adults and ¥800 for children. The park lists the 2026/27 season as 17 October to 14 February and marks the dates provisional, so check before travelling; it closes on 31 December. Expect cold, an evening of two to three hours and a display that is about scale and colour rather than subtlety.
