Frequently Asked Questions
Yamadera — the cliff-side temple of Bashō's cicada haiku, 1,015 steps up — Ginzan Onsen's gaslit Taishō-era street, the snow monsters of Mt. Zaō in midwinter, and summer cherries (the fruit kind: Yamagata grows most of Japan's).
Frost-encrusted firs that the mountain wind sculpts into looming figures — 'juhyō' — at their best from late January to February. You ride the Zaō ropeway over them by day, and on illumination nights they glow in colour.
For the scene alone, yes: wooden inns lining a stream, gas lamps, snow — the classic 'Spirited Away vibes' street. Day access is possible but awkward; an overnight in a ryokan is how it's meant to be experienced, and rooms sell out far ahead in winter.
