The "Cooking Pot Hell" — one of the most popular of Beppu's eight jigoku, where natural hot springs of strikingly different colours converge in one park. The pools are for looking at, not bathing in, but there's a free foot bath, and the local ritual is an onsen egg cooked in the spring steam washed down with cold ramune soda.
It's one of Kyushu's most representative shrines, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning — which keeps its approach busy with students praying before exams. The walk in is half the pleasure: a traditional shopping street where umegae mochi are grilled fresh at the storefronts.
Yufuin is a hot-spring town with an unhurried, artistic streak, ringed by mountains. The stroll runs along Yunotsubo Street — small galleries, handmade-goods shops and famous dessert stands — and ends at Lake Kinrin, whose misty surface is the town's signature view.
The cable car climbs Mount Tsurumi to about 1,300 metres, opening a panorama over Beppu Bay, the city and the surrounding mountains. The view turns with the seasons — one of Beppu's most popular lookouts in any month.
