First visit: Route 1 — a flat 3.5-kilometre riverside walk of one to one-and-a-half hours from Taisho Pond via Tashiro Pond to Kappa Bridge, all of it picture-book scenery. Seasoned walkers take Route 2, a 5.6-kilometre forest round from Kappa Bridge over Myojin Bridge to Hotaka Shrine Okumiya and the still water of Myojin Pond.
The wooden suspension bridge that stands as Kamikochi's symbol: from its deck the Hotaka range fills one horizon — Mount Oku-Hotaka among them, Japan's third-highest peak — with steaming Mount Yake down the valley and the Azusa River running beneath. The clustered shops and lodges beside it make the natural lunch stop.
The pond was born overnight when a Mount Yake eruption dammed the Azusa River, drowning the forest where it stood — and the bleached trunks still rise from the water a century later, dressed differently by every season's light and mist.
Layers and comfortable walking shoes — the valley sits at 1,500 metres and runs 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the cities below, even in summer. Note Kamikochi's season: the valley opens from spring to mid-November and closes for winter, with the May holidays and the autumn-foliage weeks its busiest moments.
