Ise Jingū — Shinto's most sacred shrine, rebuilt every 20 years — the wedded rocks of Meoto Iwa, Toba's pearl-diving ama women, and Matsusaka beef. It's a pilgrimage prefecture in every sense.
It's two shrine complexes — Gekū then Naikū by custom — and the buildings themselves are glimpsed, not entered, behind cedar and fences: the atmosphere is the point. Leave time for Oharai-machi, the pilgrimage street outside Naikū, and its akafuku sweets.
