Soak in Japan's oldest hot spring town: Taikou-no-Yu is Arima Onsen's largest spa, gathering the town's famed gold and silver waters into 26 baths, open-air pools and stone saunas. The whole complex is themed on Toyotomi Hideyoshi — the warlord who made Arima his retreat — down to a golden steam bath inspired by his gilded tea room. And the town itself rewards the trip: lantern-lit lanes and temples in a Rokko Mountains valley, a short train ride behind Kobe.

Arima's two celebrated springs: kinsen, an iron-rich water that turns a deep rust-gold on contact with air, and ginsen, a clear carbonated spring. Taikou-no-Yu is the rare place to move between both under one roof.
Take the train to Arima Onsen Station on the Kobe Electric Railway — the town is a short ride into the mountains behind Kobe. From the station it's about a seven-minute uphill walk, and a free shuttle bus also runs to the spa's door.
Twenty-six baths in all: six styles of open-air bath from rock pools to herbal and carbonated tubs, indoor gold- and silver-water baths, stone-sauna zones, and the golden steam bath modelled on Hideyoshi's tea room. Come early and it fills a leisurely half day.
Easily — the town sits less than two hours from Kyoto and Kansai Airport and far closer to Kobe and Osaka, so a morning stroll through its 1,300-year-old lanes followed by a long afternoon soak is a natural day out.
