A whole snowfield turned playground: Bibai Snow Land opens Hokkaido's deep winter to everyone, no skis required — snow tubing and snow soccer, bubble balls bouncing off the drifts, fat bikes and snow rafting, mini-snowmobiles for the kids and full snowmobile touring that runs kilometres across the white plain for the grown-ups. It's the rare snow day that works for a family with wildly mixed ambitions, an hour or so north of Sapporo in the Sorachi countryside, with a shuttle linking the park to JR Bibai Station.

Take the JR Hakodate Main Line to Bibai Station — about 40 minutes from Sapporo by limited express — and the park's shuttle runs from the station's west exit out to the snowfields. The tour gathers at the west exit and returns you there at the end of the day.
Deep winter — roughly late December through mid-March, when the Sorachi plain sits under metres of reliable Hokkaido snow. January and February bring the driest powder and the most dependable conditions.
