Nakagawa River Cruise

The Nakagawa River in Fukuoka at sunset, a vivid orange and pink sky mirrored in the water between lit buildings on both banks
Photo:The Nakagawa at sunset. Thirty minutes on the water, past Nakasu — the same stretch that fills with yatai food stalls once it is dark.

Fukuoka shows its best face from the water: this thirty-minute cruise on the Nakagawa River slides you past Nakasu, Kyushu's liveliest entertainment district, under the city's bridges and out to where the river opens into Hakata Bay, before turning for home at the port. Time it for dusk and the city performs its costume change mid-cruise — sunset colours giving way to neon doubling itself on the river. It is the least effort Fukuoka sightseeing ever takes, and among the most atmospheric half-hours in the city.
