The Sanriku coast catches the yamase, a cold easterly sea fog off the Oyashio current that can hold June and July highs near 20°C while Tokyo bakes. Inland Morioka is warmer, but still the mildest city summer south of Hokkaido.
Heavily inland — Hachimantai and Appi hold snow from December into April — while Morioka gets a moderate, walkable winter and the Pacific coast around Miyako sees comparatively little. The three are worth checking separately before you pack.
May to early June, and late September through October: dry, clear and comfortable. The Kitakami cherries land in late April and the Hachimantai colours run through October, both in the prefecture's most reliable stretches.
