The local saying is that you can forget your lunch but never your umbrella. Kanazawa is one of Japan's wettest cities year-round, with rain or snow on most winter days — carry one even when the morning looks settled.

Regularly from late December to February, usually wet snow that comes and goes rather than lying for months. It is the reason for Kenrokuen's yukitsuri rope cones, which go up in November and are worth the trip in themselves.

Late April to June, and October: milder, drier and clearer, before the summer humidity and long before the winter cloud closes in. Autumn at Kenrokuen and along the Noto coast is the most reliable stretch of the year.
