Two climates in one prefecture. Kobe on the Inland Sea is mild, dry and sunny; Kinosaki and the Tajima coast face the Sea of Japan and take grey skies and heavy snow from December to February — which is exactly what makes the onsen town look the way it does in the photographs.

One of the kindest urban climates in Japan. Sheltered by the Rokko mountains and cooled by sea breeze, it holds mild winters near 10°C and summers a touch less oppressive than Osaka's next door.

For weather, late October to April — the white exterior is at its best in low, clear winter light, and the approach has almost no shade for a summer queue. Early April gives you the blossom and the crowds together.
