Frequently Asked Questions
No, and it is the only part of Japan that can say so. The tsuyu front dissolves before it gets this far north, so June in Hokkaido is bright, warm and dry while Honshu sits under grey drizzle — the strongest weather argument there is for going north in early summer.
Sapporo runs between -4°C and 0°C through January with snow lying from December to March, and the inland basins around Asahikawa drop past -20°C on the coldest nights. It is a dry cold, so it bites less than the number suggests, but it needs real boots rather than fashion ones.
Late June to August: 20-26°C, low humidity and long days, which is exactly why the Furano lavender is timed for July. If snow is the point instead, January and February deliver the driest powder in the country.
