Gunma's dry winter wind. The snow falls on the far side of the mountains, so the air arriving here has been stripped of its moisture — the result is a run of cloudless, bitterly windy winter days and skin that needs more moisturiser than you packed.

Only in the north, but a great deal of it: Minakami, Kusatsu and the Tanigawa range are deep from December to March. Maebashi and Takasaki on the plain stay dry and often go a whole winter without a settling fall.

It is one of the hottest corners of Japan. The plain around Isesaki and Tatebayashi sits in a foehn-wind hot spot and regularly tops 38°C in late July and August — one of the few places where the heat is a genuine planning constraint rather than a nuisance.
