Mild and maritime: January near 10°C with occasional snow flurries that rarely settle, August around 33°C and humid. Spring and autumn are long and pleasant, which makes Fukuoka an easy year-round base for Kyushu.

Late February to May, when westerly winds carry kosa dust across from mainland Asia. On bad days visibility drops and the sky goes milky. It is worth checking the forecast if you are sensitive to it, and it usually clears within a day or two.

Heavier than Tokyo's. Northern Kyushu takes the brunt of the tsuyu front in late June and July, with genuine downpours and occasional flooding — the one stretch of the year worth actively planning around.
