Tokyo Mega Illumination

Tokyo Mega Illumination turns a racecourse into a light park. Through the winter, the grounds of Oi Racecourse in Shinagawa are covered in themed displays, from a lit representation of the Japanese seasons and a virtual waterfall of light to an aurora show across the grandstand and, as befits the venue, a paddock where visitors can meet the horses. It is a family-oriented, ticketed evening in the south of the city, and it is the largest illumination inside Tokyo itself.

The season runs from around the start of November to the second Sunday of January, but only on nights when there is no racing — some fifty-odd open evenings, 16:30 to 21:00 with last entry at 20:00 — and the calendar of open days is irregular. Check the racing schedule before choosing a date; the illumination is closed on race days. Mid-November weekdays give the mildest weather and the shortest queues, while the weekends before Christmas are the busiest.

Oi Racecourse is a short walk from Oikeibajo-mae Station on the Tokyo Monorail or Tachiaigawa on the Keikyu line, both a few stops from Shinagawa. Tickets are sold for the illumination itself, separately from racing admission. The 2026/27 season, the ninth, runs from 31 October 2026 to 10 January 2027, and the organiser bills it as the final season before Oi Racecourse is renovated. Expect an open, windswept site by the bay, so dress warmly, and a polished commercial show rather than a traditional festival.
