Marunouchi Illumination

The Marunouchi Illumination is the understated one. Where other Tokyo displays chase colour and spectacle, the business district between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace wraps some 250 street trees along Marunouchi Naka-dori and the neighbouring streets of Otemachi and Yurakucho in a single warm champagne gold — about 775,000 bulbs over 1.2 kilometres — and leaves it at that. The effect, against the brick of Tokyo Station and the glass of the office towers, is closer to Paris or Milan than to a theme park, and it has made the street a favourite winter walk for the city's own residents.

The lights run from a Thursday in mid-November to a Sunday in mid-February, from 16:00 to 23:00 every night and to midnight through December. Late November, on a weekday after 18:00, is the time to walk it: the Christmas crowds have not yet arrived and the restaurants along Naka-dori are easy to get into. In December the display extends along Gyoko-dori, the broad avenue between the station and the palace moat, and the street fills with shoppers.

Naka-dori runs directly from the Marunouchi exits of Tokyo Station, so there is nothing to plan beyond an evening walk, and it is entirely free. The 2026/27 season, the 25th, runs from 12 November 2026 to 14 February 2027. Expect a well-dressed crowd, cold pavements and an illumination that rewards a slow stroll and a glass of something warm rather than a hunt for the best photograph.
