Kobe Luminarie

Kobe Luminarie began in December 1995 as a memorial to the victims of the Great Hanshin Earthquake that January and as a light for the city's recovery, and it has been held every winter since. Its lights are Italian in origin and style: vast arches and galleries of hand-painted bulbs, in the tradition of southern Italian festival illuminations, erected over the streets of the former Foreign Settlement and culminating in a great lit hall in Higashi Yuenchi park. In recent years the main paid installation has moved to Meriken Park on the waterfront, with the free displays kept in the Settlement streets.

The festival now runs for ten days from the last Friday of January; the 32nd edition runs from 29 January to 7 February 2027. The lights come on at dusk and the crowds, which are very large, are channelled one way through the Settlement streets. Weeknights immediately after the opening are the least crowded, and the Meriken Park paid area is cheaper on weekdays and with an advance ticket, so a Monday or Tuesday early in the run is the time to plan for.

The sites are a walk from Sannomiya, Motomachi or Kobe stations, and the memorial character of the event is real: a moment of silence and a memorial wall are part of it, and the organisers ask visitors to donate towards its continuation. Expect cold, a slow procession under the lights and an event whose beauty is inseparable from its meaning. It is not a Christmas illumination and it does not try to be one.
