Sendai's Tanabata is a festival of decoration rather than movement. For three days in early August the covered shopping arcades of the city centre, Chuo-dori, Clis Road and Ichibancho, are hung with thousands of fukinagashi, streamers of handmade washi paper that fall from bamboo poles high overhead almost to the ground, each set made by a shop or business and judged for its craft. Walking beneath them, with the paper stirring in the draught, is the whole point.
The festival dates are fixed at 6 to 8 August, a month after the rest of Japan's Tanabata by the old calendar. The evening before, on 5 August, a large fireworks display is launched from Nakanose Green Space on the Hirose River from 19:30 to 20:30 and serves as the opening act. The best time to see the streamers themselves is the morning of the 6th, when they are freshly hung and the arcades are still relatively empty; by the afternoon the crowds jostle them and the paper begins to fray.
Sendai is a direct shinkansen ride from Tokyo, and the arcades begin a short walk from the station, so it works as a long day trip or as part of a wider Tohoku festival circuit alongside Aomori and Akita, which fall in the same week. There are stage performances and food stalls in the parks, but no procession, and the streamers come down on the evening of the 8th.
