The Minato Mirai Festival packs an unusual amount of fireworks into a short time. From 19:10 on a single August evening, around 18,000 shells are launched over the harbour in about forty-five minutes, choreographed to music and set against the towers, the Ferris wheel and the Red Brick Warehouse of Yokohama's redeveloped waterfront. The density is the point: this is a modern, tightly programmed show rather than a slow traditional display.
It falls on a weekday, and in 2026 the date is 24 August rather than the early-August slot of previous years. The best views are from the waterfront parks that face the launch barges, Rinko Park and Osanbashi Pier, where paid seating is laid out and worth the cost; the free promenade behind them fills early and the sightlines are broken by trees and crowds. Bay-view hotel rooms around Minato Mirai are the other reliable seat, and they are booked weeks ahead.
Minato Mirai and Sakuragicho stations are a walk from the waterfront, and Yokohama is under an hour from central Tokyo, so the festival is easily done as an evening out. Expect a large, well-managed crowd, warm weather and a slow exit through the shopping malls afterwards. There is no festival beyond the fireworks themselves, though the waterfront's restaurants make an evening of it.
