Kawachi Fuji-en is a small private garden in the hills above Kitakyushu that opens to the public for a few weeks each year, when its wisteria bloom. The images that made it famous are of its two tunnels, long walkways roofed with trellises from which the flowers hang in graded bands of white, pink, mauve and deep purple, so that the light inside changes colour as you walk. Beyond them a large trellised dome and a hillside of further plantings complete a garden that is far smaller than Ashikaga and, for that reason, more intimate.
The season runs from around 18 to 20 April to 6 May, and the best colour is in the last week of April. Entry is by timed advance ticket only, with no sales at the gate; the tickets are released in late March or early April and sell out quickly, particularly for the early-morning slots. The 8:00 to 10:00 window is the one to aim for, when the light comes low through the tunnels and the garden is at its emptiest.
The garden is in the hills of Yahatahigashi Ward, a taxi or a shuttle bus from Yahata Station, and it can be combined with the Kawachi Reservoir walks nearby. It is a modest place with few facilities and no restaurant. Expect steep paths, a strict time slot and a garden that lives or dies by the state of the wisteria in the week you have booked.
