Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival

Hirosaki Park is where northern Japan's cherry blossom season reaches its climax. The castle grounds hold an extraordinary density of trees, pruned over generations using apple-orchard techniques that produce unusually heavy blooms, and the moats beneath them are the setting for the two sights that make Hirosaki famous: tunnels of blossom over the water, and the hanaikada, the "petal raft" that coats the moat surface a few days after full bloom.

The festival runs from mid-April into Golden Week, with the park lit after dark, rowing boats on the moat and rows of food stalls along the main paths. Blossom timing is the whole game. In a warm spring the peak arrives in mid-April and the opening date is pulled forward, as it was in 2026 when the festival opened on 10 April, while in a cool year the best days fall in the holiday week itself. Check the park's own bloom forecast before you commit to dates, and give yourself two or three nights so you can see both the full bloom and the petal carpet that follows.

Hirosaki is a short train ride from Aomori, and the park is a short bus ride or a walk from the station. Golden Week brings the heaviest crowds and the highest hotel prices in the region; a weekday visit in the second half of April is usually quieter and, in recent years, better timed to the flowers. The castle keep sits in a paid inner area, but the moats, the tunnels of blossom and the evening illumination are free to wander.
